Level 1 (low-grade granite)
Also referred to as either “builder’s grade” or “commercial grade,” this granite is of the lowest quality. That’s why it’s commonly used in apartments and prefab remodels. Unlike top-of-the-line granite with a thickness of 1/2 to 3/4-inch, level 1 is roughly just 3/8-inch.
Since level 1 granite is so thin, it usually needs added strength and support in the way of plywood backing. This low-grade granite typically comes from China. It’s then sold through big box stores or liquidators. Also, some companies cut this grade into tile, again used for low-end projects.
Level 2 (mid-grade granite)
Level 2 granite is a step up from level 1, meaning it’s better quality. Although this granite comes from different parts of the world, Brazil is among the biggest exporters. Not only is the thickness of level 2 granite 3/4-inch thick on average, but its colors and patterns create a more authentic appearance.
Level 3 (high-grade granite)
At the top is level 3 granite. This granite is among the finest available. For instance, slabs of this granite typically boast beautifully unique patterns, colors, and veins. Generally, Canada, Brazil or India offers this material. Although level 3 granite costs the most, it’s worth the investment. Sometime known as quartzite.
